When did you last take a nice, full breath?

One of the fastest ways to shift your energy state is by using the breath. Breathing more fully, deeply, and consciously brings much benefit into our lives. The word pranayama alludes to breathwork– breathing using certain patterns and techniques to help the prana to flow through the body. Using the breath helps us to connect our ethereal body to our physical body. The breath itself invites in prana– the vital life force energy.

Breathe in love, Exhale negativity

Even just bringing awareness to our breath invites the Heart to open. The breath is the bridge between the physical and nonphysical aspects of ourselves, and it is one with the Heart Chakra, an expression of the Heart. The breath invites in energy. If we are not breathing efficiently then it can lead to disconnection from our bodies, and feeling less vibrant. Working with the breath helps direct the energies to where they need to be. Pranayama prepares us for the future. As we work this practice into our life,

How to Practice Pranayama

The most important thing to keep in mind is to stop if you feel discomfort at all when practicing. There are a few simple ways to practice pranayama. These practices are meant to bring comfort and vibrancy to you, not to cause harm. One practice is to simply become aware of the breath. Aware of the inhale and the exhale.

Practice breathing deeply. There are also different breathings we do in yoga to pair with the postures and poses of yoga. There are more advanced practices of pranayama, such as the “fire breath.” I suggest learning these from a skilled teacher, and have some experience doing some of the simpler pranayamas. Sometimes doing them incorrectly can cause more harm than good.

I hope you all take a few more mindful breaths today!
